Learn more about the Executive Director Position

The Racial Justice Coalition (RJC) is ripe for an experienced Executive Director with a passion for racial justice and a proven record of solid administrative, written, and oral communications, organizational management, and team-building skills. RJC offers a unique opportunity for qualified candidates to contribute their gifts to build a dynamic team of leaders to foster racial justice in Asheville, N.C.

RJC is a Black-led organization comprising a collection of diverse, vibrant folks who fundamentally and passionately believe that deep community engagement begins with cultivating authentic relationships and inspiring Black Joy. Formed in response to the shootings of Michael Brown and Eric Garner in 2014, the RJC was initially supported by volunteer efforts until we became a fiscally sponsored organization in 2019. In our nine years, the RJC has significantly impacted the local area regarding more equitable local law enforcement policies, removing racist Confederate monuments on public property, and supporting COVID-19 response efforts and rental assistance, among many other accomplishments. In 2022, RJC became a 501(c)3 organization and is re-imagining, restructuring, and rebuilding our organization.

Our Coalition Supporters are a broad-based alliance of individuals and organizations committed to addressing systemic racism and state-sanctioned violence against Black people and those most impacted by poverty, criminalization, and mass incarceration. Through grassroots-led organizing and community collaborations, the RJC seeks to achieve and sustain deep equity by building power with those historically underrepresented, dismantling policies and institutions that uphold racism, and reimagining a community where justice exists for all people.

With national attention on Asheville as the first U.S. city to commit to a reparations process in the South, we have a unique position to provide insight into understanding this bold remedy designed to reduce structural racism and inequities. Currently a coalition of 16 nonprofits in Asheville and Buncombe County, the RJC was instrumental in rallying support for the City and County reparations resolutions. The RJC serves as a bridge between the Black community and local government throughout the reparations process, working with Black-led organizations and community leaders to ensure that Black community members have power, voice, and choice in the local reparations process.

This work is primarily implemented through the Every Black Voice (EBV) Campaign, a community-partnered effort to create and advance equitable solutions regarding structural racism and inequities. We aim to provide future support for Black-led initiatives stemming from the Community Reparations Commission’s Five Impact Focus areas, which reflect vital Social Drivers of Health:

  • Education
  • Economic Development
  • Criminal Justice
  • Health & Wellness
  • Housing
