Invest in reimagining an anti-racist Asheville
The RJC is a collection of diverse, vibrant folks who, fundamentally and passionately, believe that deep community engagement begins with cultivating authentic relationships and inspiring Black Joy. Your donation helps to build capacity at the organization and help secure the necessary resources to drive the success of our current and future campaigns and initiatives.
Thank you for your support as we continue to grow our grassroots organizing efforts and authentically build meaningful community engagement as we combat structural racism in Asheville and Buncombe County.
Our Campaigns
Every Black Voice
With national attention on Asheville as the first U.S. city to pass reparations in the South, we have a unique position to provide insight to understanding this bold remedy designed to reduce structural racism and inequities.
RJC’s most recent ongoing community engagement effort, the Walk the Walk Campaign, is the backbone for our current Every Black Voice initiative. Our focus is to fill the gap in evidence regarding the process of change and the perceived and real impact of a reparations commission on systems, structures, and the lives of African Americans. Community engagement is foundational to this work as we advance and center community-driven solutions that come from the people most affected by structural racism.
The Every Black Voice Campaign is a community-partnered effort to create and advance equitable solutions by elevating Black narratives of those within Asheville and Buncombe County.
Government Accountability Project (GAP)
The Government Accountability Project (GAP) regularly gathers information about the policy proposals and decisions being developed and implemented by our local government. Team members regularly attend dozens of committee meetings, carefully analyze each City Council and County Commission agenda, and meet with both elected officials and key members of staff. All of this information is then be analyzed by our Strategy Team, made up of thought leaders with deep ties to the community and extensive policy experience, in order to distill what is most relevant to racial justice. This breakdown of the most urgent matters making their way through the political process is shared with the public through our weekly GAP reports, which offer a synthesis of what’s happening, why it’s important, and what local activists can do to influence outcomes.
How will donations be used?
- Additional Strategy Team hours and more frequent reporting. Right now, our Strategy Team meets weekly for an hour to analyze the information we have gathered. With additional funding, they could meet a second time, and we could produce a second report each week, which would double the amount of timely information we could offer the community.
- Enhanced website to facilitate more effective advocacy issue tracking. Users would be able to set up their own accounts, with alerts when our reports include items they are especially interested in. We’d incorporate templates and expedite the process of taking action. Issues would be better tracked and analyzed over time.
- Expansion of our Information Gathering and Strategy Teams to include more issue experts.
